Free Spirit Fitness - Success Story
‘There is Nothing Unusual About My Story…’
I am sure that many people in their 40s can relate to exactly the same obstacles that got in the way of me being the fit 20 year old I once was.
I’ve been sporty all my life and at school and university, I spent half my time training. When I got a serious job, I had to cut back but whenever I could, and every weekend I was outside doing something active! I married a keen athlete and we would spend most of our spare time running, cycling or hiking together. When we got pregnant, I didn’t really believe it when people told me that with children, everything would change. I expected things to be different of course, but nothing prepared me for just how different life would be.
My husband did some research and put me in touch with Victoria at Free Spirit. We met for a consultation and I was really impressed by how well Victoria listened to what I wanted to achieve from training together
After our first child was born and I had recovered from the birth, my husband would encourage me to head off for a trot and I soon got back into it. I admit, we missed running together and there were times when I happily chose to spend time at home enjoying the family time as opposed to running on my own, but we got a running buggy and a stout baby carrier and headed outside as much as we could all together…happy times!
When our second child was born life became more complicated. I went back to work when she was 5 months old, leaving my husband with two children under 2 at home. As you can imagine, finding time for both of us to train became much harder, but we managed it; my husband and I taking it in turns to usher each other out of the door after we had put the children to bed.
Then I got a new job, which meant moving house and a much longer commute for me. Suddenly I lost 90 minutes at each end of the day, eating into our precious “spare” time! The job was more intense as well so I worked longer hours. By the time I got home, I was so exhausted from the stress of work that I could barely bring myself to open the bottle of wine I would then consume on the sofa watching TV.
I joined a gym, intending to visit en route for work but leaving home at 0500 every day became harder and harder, particularly as my children started their clingy phase at around that time. Even if I had felt energetic enough to go running, the crying and ensuing guilt usually kept me at home trying to compensate for being away for so long during the day. Needless to say, the gym didn’t last long!
By paying a fixed amount up front every month, it becomes a routine commitment that you stick to no matter what. The best part is that by booking in advance, there is no option to decide that you can’t be bothered that night
Unsurprisingly, the weight started creeping on and I got more depressed as I became less fit, fatter and missed the exercise. I would run only occasionally, and my bad back became worse because I was spending so much sedentary time…which stopped me running…which made me depressed…you get the idea – not a very positive cycle at all.
I knew I needed to take evasive action, but really couldn’t see a way to change my lifestyle and fit everything in. So, that Christmas, knowing how unhappy I was becoming with myself, my husband did some research and put me in touch with Victoria at Free Spirit. We met for a consultation and I was really impressed by how well Victoria listened to what I wanted to achieve from training together. She really took the time to get to know my personality and I knew straightaway that it was going to work between us.
Three years on and the rest is history! If I told you that I ran 107 miles last summer, that gives you a pretty good idea of what magic Victoria and her team have worked on me.
Despite still driving a long way and sitting at a desk all day, the carefully put together sessions with Free Spirit really complement my running and mean my back health has never been better. I have lost weight, my shape is back where I want it and I generally feel so much happier. The flexibility of when we meet suits my job perfectly – I can choose which days and times suit my diary.
It is brilliant to put the children to bed and then be able to have a really good work out whilst they sleep upstairs.

I need variety to keep me motivated - and by having a team of trainers who work with me on a regular basis, the repertoire is different every time and keeps it really interesting for me. The only thing that is guaranteed is that I will be sweating by the end of it!

I can barely remember what it was like being the person who met Victoria three years ago. I would never have dreamt of being able to run more than 7 miles, let alone 107! I can’t recommend her and the team enough and I am grateful every day that they are part of my life.
Feel better, move better, live better.
