Everyone knows that feeling when you wake up in the morning and go to move and everything just aches: The shoulders feel stiff, the hips still want to sleep and we pray that a coffee (or seven) will bring us back to life! I promise you know, movement will do a better job than any amount of caffeine. 10-15 minutes moving your body and you honestly feel reborn! The increase in circulation wakens everything – increasing blood flow to both brain and body whilst working the joints through their natural range of motion is the equivalent of getting the WD40 on the bike. This time investment is so worth the rewards that it brings.
What if I am not doing it right?
Many people avoid doing yoga because they are worried that they will do it wrong or they will hurt themselves in some way. Let me reassure you that your health is at far more risk from NOT MOVING than moving daily. If you are worried then just take it slowly and listen to your body. Some postures might be challenging but nothing should ever be painful. Pain is a good indicator that that movement is not for you at this time. The postures don’t have to be perfect in order for them to benefit you.
Having supports nearby like a small coffee table, a wall and yoga blocks can also help in finding your way into the more challenging postures: don’t be afraid to use props till you feel more confident. Some one-to-one sessions will also help you feel more relaxed and empowered on the mat 🙂
